Preparing your workforce for an emergency evacuation

Emergency fire at an oil refinery

Planning for emergencies is critical for your business. In the event of a fire or chemical spill, you need immediate and accurate accounting of the damage to equipment, materials and personnel – and a way to contain it. Building systems for emergency evacuations and equipment shutdown is a must; and you need infrastructure and tools to support them. With the right systems in place, you can greatly reduce your liability and the concerns of your regulators, and build better accountability within your workforce.

Several of our customers have employed technology to improve their emergency response plans, including technology from Enterprise Air. With our RapidCount mobile evacuation and mustering kit, our customers can easily create mustering stations at any location in their facility, any time, to act as ‘check-in’ posts for evacuees. Because RapidCount can scan any identification card in seconds, and interface with any popular Physical Access Control System, our customers can immediately compare data to quickly determine who has recently entered a facility, which of them have successfully evacuated, and which of them remain.

The RapidCount system is highly portable, entirely enclosed in a ruggedized briefcase, and offers a number of features that make it extremely well-suited to an emergency environment:

Tracking evacuations using a mobile handheld card reader
  • Rapidly scans any identification card in seconds, as people evacuate

  • Quickly builds lists of missing persons, and provides safe lists to emergency hotlines

  • Collects injury information and exposure to hazardous materials

  • Tracks shut-off procedures to ensure they are performed correctly

  • Operates with or without a wireless network

  • Integrates easily with central command and control, and to any popular Physical Access Control System (PACS)

  • Provides compliance to OSHA and NFPA requirements for emergency action plans

RapidCount is also very easy to operate, and has proven very effective in drills. In one recent case, the U.S. Department of Defense ran a major counter-terrorism drill using RapidCount. During the drill, over 500 employees, contractors and visitors were successfully tracked during a simulated evacuation, with no errors, and with only a one-minute training session given to each volunteer operator of the RapidCount system.

For many of our customers, RapidCount now provides a vital component of the emergency infrastructure system. Its use and its features provide a great illustration of good emergency preparedness and the use of technology to implement it.

Is your workplace ready for an emergency?

An electronic evacuation mustering system is highly recommended for all of the following scenarios:

Facilities that house potentially dangerous materials or equipment (toxic chemicals, explosives, munitions)
Sites that provide critical infrastructure (such as energy, communications, financial systems, or health services)
Sites flagged as ‘high-risk’ by OSHA, the EPA, or Department of Homeland Security
Any facility in close proximity to a high-risk site
Any operations team planning to upgrade its emergency infrastructure for increased safety

Solutions from Enterprise Air, including RapidCount, are designed to scale to thousands of cardholders and integrate deeply with existing systems for emergency management, incident reporting, and controlling physical security.
